Institute of animal biology of UAAS (founded on November, the 3rd, of 1960) is a leading research establishment in the branch of stock-raising and veterinary medicine; a main scientific and methodic center in Ukraine on the issues of agricultural animals' physiology and biochemistry; the complex programe "Fundamental and applied researches" concerning scientific supplying the development of agroindustrial complex of Ukraine for 2006-2010.

Institute is the leading institution, scientific and methodical center "Animal physiology". The Institute co-ordinates the implementation of the Scientific and Technical programe" Health preservation physiological and biochemical basis and high productivity of animals" including medicine of UAAS and clinical veterinary medicine of UAAS. This programme is executed by more than ten leading institutions of UAAS system, Ministry of agrarian policy of Ukraine and Department of education and science of Ukraine: Institute of stock-raising of UAAS, Institute of stock-raising of central's of UAAS, Institute of fish industry, Institute of agriculture and stock-raising of the Western region of UAAS, Institute of forages of UAAS, Bukovina institute of agroindustrial production of UAAS, M. Ivanov Institute of stock-raising of steppe's, Ternopil' institute of agroindustrial production of UAAS, Institute of agricultural microbiology, Institute of the pig-breeding of UAAS, Institute of veterinary medicine of UAAS, Institute of experimental and clinical veterinary medicine of UAAS.

Vasyl' Vlizlo - the veterinary sciences doctor, professor, academician of UAAS is the director of the Institute of animal biology from 2001 and also head of Scientific and Production Centre on studying prion infections., Poland, Slovakia, Russia, Belarus.

Institute cooperates with scientific institutions of Austria,Britain, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic

Basic scientific work directions of Institute of animal biology of UAAS are: study of biological basis of animal's growth and development, metabolism in agricultural animals, animals' reproductive ability increase biotechnological methods and study of immune potential forming molecular mechanisms in animals, obtaining ecologically clean foodstuff methods. The unique in Ukraine Scientific and Production Centre on studying prion infections, coordinating research concerning the epizootology of prion infections in animals, developing the methods of diagnostics, prophylaxis and methods of struggle against transmittive spongiform encephalopathy was created at the Institute.

2 academicians and 3 Corresponding Members of UAAS, 16 doctors of sciences and 65 candidates of sciences work in the Institute. Training scientific personnel is conducted through post-graduate and doctor's degree courses. By specialties: "biochemistry", "human and animal physiology",, "breeding and selection" and doctor's degree courses by specialty "biochemistry".

The specialized council D.35.368.01 for the defence of doctoral and candidate's dissertations by specialty "biochemistry" for gaining doctors and candidates degree of biological, veterinary and rural-economic sciences is functioning at the Institute.
