An opening in Lviv in November, 1960 of Ukrainian scientific-research institute of farming animal physiology and biochemistry that after 40 years of existence became the main state scientific institution, having experienced organizational and structural changes and now is successfully functioning under new name "Institute of animal biology of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences (IAB NAAS) was an important historical event in lives of scientists and specialists of animal description. The last mentioned was found on the 10th of April 2000 according to the resolution of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences Presidium from the 21st of March 2000 № 5 p.L."About a perfection of a network system of Academy's scientific institutions" and instruction of NAAS from the 10th of April 2000 №35"About the foundation of the Institute of cattle breeding in the Western region of NAAS and an Institute of animal biology of NAAS".

An institute of animal biology of NAAS is a successor of an Institute of animal physiology and biochemistry of NAAS, that is, in one's turn, a successor of Ukrainian scientific-research institute of farming animal physiology and biochemistry, created on the 3rd of November 1960 in a system of Ukrainian Academy of agricultural sciences of The Ministry of Rural Affairs of URSR on the basis of the department of farming animal biochemistry of scientific-research Institute of cattle breeding of the Western regions of URSR. A founder and the first director of the Ukrainian scientific-research institute of farming animal physiology and biochemistry (USRIFAPB) was a Corresponding Member of The Academy of Sciences of URSR, an academic of Ukrainian academy of agricultural sciences, a Doctor of biological sciences, professor.

An institute was in a system of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences up to the 1962. In 1962 it went into a department of an Academy of Sciences of URSR, and from 1963 - into a department of a Ministry of rural affairs of URSR. From the January 1970 an Institute is subjected to the Southern department. After a foundation in Ukraine in 1990 of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences USRIFAPB under the name an Institute of animal physiology and biochemistry is in its department.

A reunion of the Institute of animal physiology and biochemistry with the Institute of cattle breeding in the Western region of NAAS and a foundation of the Institute of animal biology of NAAS on their basis took place in 1997.An institute was functioning under such name up to the 10th of April 2000.

In the beginning of its existence USRIFAPB united eight laboratories: of metabolism (a head-), farming animal, individual evolution, higher nervous functioning, physiological essential principles of physiology of lactation, physiology of reproduction, isotopes with an X-ray room, 1961.

In the process of Institute formation a subject-matter of scientific-research works were being improved, new directions of scientific researches emerged as well as existent enlarged. It was necessary to create new scientific subdivisions. New laboratories such as: of biologically-energetic agents, ferments, biochemical essential principles of proteins and amino acids, vitamins, were created during 1962-1976.

The directors of the Institute during 1960-200 years were: an academician of a Doctor of veterinarian sciences headed the institute from the 15th of March 2001.

The Structure of Ukrainian scientific-research institute of farming animal physiology and biochemistry (from 1992 - the Institute of animal physiology and biochemistry of NAAS) was stable and was meeting the main priority directions of scientific-research work during a long period of time. On 01.01.1993 14 laboratories, 1 sector and 1 department of coordination and organization of scientific works were in a structure of the Institute Staff consisted of 197 persons, including 70 scientific members (12 Doctors and 56 candidates of science). 23 persons were studying post-graduate course, 13 of which were studying without a separation from production. Nowadays the structure of an Institute includes: 3 departments and 12 laboratories :of metabolism named after prof. Gzhyts'kyy (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - Y. Salyha), cows feeding and milk creation regulation (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - V. Charkin), a biology of growth and evolution of animals (Doctor of biologic sciences - V. Yanovych), endocrine regulation (chief - academician of NAAS - V. Snityns'kyy), immunology (chief-candidate of veterinary sciences - O. Vishchur), physiologically- biochemical essential principles of poultry feeding (chief-candidate of biologic sciences H. Stoyanovs'ka), microbiological synthesis of biologically active substances (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - M. Stenchuk), ecological physiology and biochemistry(chief-candidate of biologic sciences - R. Fedoruk), biotechnology of animal reproduction (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - M. Sharan), laboratory of biochemical essential principles of wool-creation (chief-Doctor of agricultural sciences - P. Stapay), laboratory of genetics and breeding of farming animals (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - M. Berdychevs'kyy), department of scientific-technical information and device providing, (chief-candidate of biologic sciences - Y. Salyha) department of coordination, marketing and familiarization with Scientific elaborations.

A new Department of breeding, genetics and biotechnology of animal reproduction, that was supplied with scientific-manufacturing base of former Lviv subsidiary of an Institute of animal breeding and genetics, was created on the basis of laboratories: biotechnology of animal reproduction, genetics and breeding of farming animals and according to academic council decision .A sector of biology of pig reproduction was created in a structure of laboratory of biotechnology, as well as a scientific-manufacturing sector of biology of big horned cattle reproduction was created in a structure.

According to joint instruction of a Ministry of agrarian politics and Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences №59/29 from 25.06.2001 on the base of the Institute a Scientific-manufacturing center that studies animal infections, that is to function as a main scientific provider of coordination and conducting researches connected with infections,a developer of theoretical and applied questions from biological basis of monitoring system about animal infections in Ukraine; developer and methods and ways of diagnostics and precautions from animal infections.

The given structure meets a statute of the Institute, the main directions of scientific researches, an aim and tasks, set for NAAS scientific-methodical center "Animal physiology" and its main institution, that is the Institute of animal biology. Due to the first of January, 2001 staff included 194 workers, including 66 scientific workers (11 Doctors and 43 candidates of science, 12 persons without scientific degree). 1 academic and 2 Corresponding Members of NAAS, 5 professors, 2 honored workers of science and leading technologies, 16 superior scientific coworkers were among scientists.

27 post-graduate students are studying a post-graduate course, 10 of which with a separation from production. A training of post-graduate students nowadays is conducted according two specialties: 03.00.04-"biochemistry" (an instruction of Ukraine №431 from 06.07.2001)
