History

The laboratory was established in 2000 as genetics and breeding laboratory. In 2004 it was renamed into the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Genetics, in 2005 - into Animal Breeding and Genetics, and in 2007 - into Biological Bases of animal Genetics and Breeding. After joining it in 2012 Embryonic Biotechnology Laboratory it was called Reproductive Biotechnology and Breeding, and starting from 2015 - Laboratory of Animal Breeding and Selection.

Research areas:

  • improvement and consolidation of cattle breeds;
  • study selection and genetic and biological characteristics of the animals;
  • development of effective methods and the ways of preserving the gene pool of local and endangered breeds of farm animals;
  • genetic marking of desired hereditary material during the formation of genealogical structure of breeds;
  • study the dynamics of genetic variation of populations and breeds in the Western Ukraine;
  • study the state of homozygosis by the polymorphic proteins and enzymes systems of blood and milk proteins and determination their relationships with economically useful characteristics of animals;
  • development and theoretical underpinning selection parameters by the indices of growth and development, milk production, reproductive ability and complex breeding and genetic and biological characteristics;
  • development of long-term plans of selection and breeding work and programs of dairy cattle selection.

Research are conducted on productive animals using modern methods: zootechnical, biochemical, morphological, chemical, genetic and biometric.

Laboratory tasks

Carried out researshes is part of the state program 29 "Development of innovative production technologies, systems of feeding and selection methods of cattle and cattle products quality assurance ("Cattle"). According to this program in the 2016-2018 the task 29.01.01.07.П "Study biological and selective-genetic characteristics of domestic animal breeds and development of the methods to improve them on the basis of modern biological approaches" will be implemented.

Scientific achievements of laboratory

On the basis of laboratory 4 Phd theses were defended and 6 Phd theses and three doctoral theses are prepearing. It is published more than 400 scientific works, including 1 manual, 4 teaching mediums, 12 monographs, 15 recommendations, guidelines, programs and 3 utility model patents.

Scientific theorizing

  • stepwise selection method of heifers of Ukrainian Black-and-Red and-White dairy breeds growth by weight and line;
  • selection criteria of Ukrainian Black-and-Red and-White dairy cows by the complex selective features;
  • selection parameters of Western Ukrainian interbreed type of Black-and-White servicing bulls by male germ cell production indices;
  • the way of forming valuable genotypes;
  • optimizing method selection in dairy cattle populations;
  • selection programs of Western Ukrainian interbreed type of Black-and-White dairy cattle;
  • Early lambing stimulation method.

The laboratory offers cooperation to farms of different ownership forms:

  • to develop plans for selection and breeding work and selection of cattle programs and their scientific support;
  • comprehensive evaluation of breeding stock;
  • to improve the system of organization and management of breeding farms;
  • to study genetic and biological characteristics of the animals;
  • to develop methods to improve breeding and productive qualities of the animals;
  • to develop effective methods and ways of preserving the gene pool of local and endangered breeds of farm animals.
